Android Malware Attacks

Android Malware Attacks

Android malware can allow cyber criminals to intercept messages, monitor calls, steal personal information, and even listen in with the device’s microphone. Its able to infiltrate user devices in many ways, adult apps are one such path to infection. There are various adult-themed apps that are infecting users with malware; neither app, however, is hosted on the official Google Play Android app store.
There are usually three types of Smartphone malware:

1. Ransomware:
Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts your files and demands a ransom to be paid off to re-gain access back to your files. An example of ransomware is an app called Simplocker. Simplocker is a Trojan that disguises itself as an app suitable for adults only. This ransomware was discovered by security researchers at ESET in Russian forums.

2. Sextortion malware:
Sextortion is an online blackmail where the victim is persuaded into performing sexual acts that are secretly recorded. The attacker then threatens to upload the video and send it to their friends or relatives if the victim doesn’t give in to their demands. These attacks are common in Asian countries.
3. Android power off hijack:
Android Power Off Hijack discovered by AVG, is a type of malware that hijacks the process responsible for shutting down your smartphone, so that it appears to be off when in fact it’s functioning. It even plays the shutdown animation to convince you that it’s really turning off. What this power off hijack does is it secretly takes pictures, makes calls, and sends messages while you think that your phone is turned off.
In one case, a Chinese SMS Trojan is hidden inside of a Chinese language adult app. Once a user installs the app, random adult sites are shown to the user in the foreground, while in the background, the app sends the user’s information via SMS to the attackers. The malware is able to get access to the user’s information, due in part to the fact that the app is granted permission by the user when installed. “It is always highly recommended for mobile users to understand the permissions,”.
“This usually means that lot of mobile users ignore the permissions page while installing the apps,” The other adult app containing malware that attempts to scare victims with a fake security notice (Ransomware Attack).

Victims
A user installed the app, the user’s screen showed a fake warning from Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team (ICS-CERT) claiming the device was found to be visiting sites containing forbidden sexually explicit content. The malware had stolen the user’s information, including email inbox messages, and send them to a remote command and control (C&C) server. This was a SMS Info stealer attack. “The command and control server for the SMS Trojan app is located in Hong Kong, whereas the command and control server for SMS Info stealer app is located in United States,”. Of particular note for both SMS Trojan and Info stealer is that common mobile antivirus technologies.

A fake BBM app recently appeared in the Google Play store and managed to secure more than 100,000 downloads before being removed. The app itself was nothing more than a spamming service.
About 10,000 devices were infected as of February 18th 2015 with this malware. However, this type of malware only affects Android versions under 5.0, requires root access and has been found only on apps outside of Google Play Store.
To stay safe, don’t download apps from Chinese app stores or any unknown app stores. Always download your apps from Google Play Store.

Boost-up android phone

Boost-up Your android Smart Phone

Android devices have a tendency of getting old. And not only in the physical way, prolonged usage can also take a toll on performance, making it seem like you need to upgrade your phone sooner than you thought. What gives? Well, you may be able to save your smartphone by performing a few tricks that can push your handset forward, possibly making it as snappy as the first day you turned it on.
Whether you have the newest, fastest Android phone available or an older device that’s starting to show its age in its declining performance, there’s a neat little trick that should speed up the overall feel of your Android phone.

Switching off Animations for the phone

Phones generally have a lot of animations to improve the user experience. These look very good when the phone is brand new but, over time, these make the phone appear a lot slower. These animations load up slowly when there are a lot of other apps loaded up in the RAM, because of which they somewhat mellow out the whole experience.

One of the fastest way to get the phone back to speed would be to either switch these animations off or to slow them down. To do this, the Developer Option on the phone needs to be enabled. This is done by going to Settings>About Phone and tapping the Build Number multiple times to get the mode. Once Developer mode is enabled go to Settings>Developer Options and then scroll down. Options like Window Animation Scale, Transition Animation scale and Animator duration scale will now be visible. All these are set to 1x by default, to improve the performance, so reduce all three to 0.5x or simple switch them off.

Uninstall Apps and Bloatware

We love to download apps on our smartphones and why not, most of them are free on the Google Play Store! The most common reason for phones to slow down, however, is Apps. What most of us do is download lots of apps and we may only use a few of them. These apps are not only occupying precious space on the phone, some apps also wake the processor up or utilize RAM even when not being actively used. Even manufacturers install apps in the phone that are just idle. Samsung mobiles typically had a lot of such bloatware apps on their phone but has recently reduced it. If you have bloatware on the phone, consider uninstalling or disabling it by going to Settings>Applications.

Switching from Dalvik To ART

Dalvik and ART are two different runtime methods by which Android systems runs applications. Dalvik runtime method is used on phones before Android Lollipop. With Dalvik, the apps are compiled just before they are required. With ART, the phone compiles the app and stores it such that it is ready to fire up quickly when required. If your smartphone is on Android 4.4 Kitkat then you have the option to switch the runtime. Once done, the device will restart and start optimizing apps to run with the changed settings.

Clear App Cache

As we use the apps installed on our phones they generate cache, which is stored on the phone. The stored cache is used as reference, when it is run later. If an app is misbehaving, or slowing your phone down, the easiest way to fix it is to wipe the app cache. This makes the app generate cache again from scratch and would fix errors and slowdowns; as an added benefit it also frees up space on the phone. You can also do it for the entire operating system by wiping phone cache. This process isn’t easy and should be done only when the device is intolerable. Wiping cache on different phones has different procedures and you will have to look up the exact procedure for your phone.

Keep your phone’s software up to date

Have you been putting off installing that update that keeps nagging you in the notification area? Remember software updates are not always about new features. In fact, most times the main purpose of these OTA upgrades is to squash bugs and introduce performance enhancements. Make sure your phone’s software is always on the latest version available.

Format Your Smartphone

When all else fails this is a sure shot method to get your phone back to its glory. Formatting a smartphone wipes everything, it’s like starting all over on a blank canvas. For most phones you can go to Settings>Backup & Reset and find the option to Factory Data Reset the phone. Before you rush to do it, keep in mind that you’ll lose everything on the phone unless you back it up. If you have saved all your contacts onto your Google Account then it’ll be available after the reset. You will also need to backup your photos and messages. Once the phone is reset, give it some time to settle before setting it up.
